"The Portal: How an AI Photo Screen Turns Visitors into Brand Ambassadors"
By Marius Rieg · · 3 min read
Summary: The Portal is an interactive AI screen by Luftschloss that puts visitors inside a staged brand world - from the idle-mode eye-catcher through product selection to a personal AI image that gets shared, printed, or used as a lead. Six modules, one experience worth remembering.
At trade shows and events, brands compete for the same scarce resource: real attention. Brochures end up in bags, screens run in the background, giveaways land in drawers. With the Portal, we at Luftschloss built a format that flips the script – an interactive AI screen where visitors don't just watch, they become the subject themselves.
What is the Portal?
The Portal is an interactive experience system: a large-format screen behind which generative AI, software, and brand content work together. Visitors make a selection, take a snapshot – and seconds later receive an individual image that places them right in the middle of the brand's world. Digital, straight to the phone, printed as a giveaway on request.
The underlying idea: people don't remember ads they've seen. They remember experiences they were part of.
The flow, in six modules
1. Idle mode – the eye-catcher. Even without active use, the Portal is working: rotating content, calls to action, and a gallery of already-generated results run on the screen and invite people to try it. Seeing what other visitors just created makes you want to try it yourself – the installation's own results are its best advertising.
2. Selection – what do I want to see? In active mode, the visitor picks specific elements: products, clothing, furniture, colors, or patterns. That selection flows directly into the AI generation. For brands, this is the crucial difference from generic AI photo gimmicks – the brand's own product sits at the center of the result, not some random fantasy motif.
3. Experience boost – who do I want to be? Additionally, traits, moods, or roles can be chosen that give the result personality. That way, the same installation becomes a different experience for every audience – from a serious business portrait to a playful campaign motif.
4. Snapshot – the personal moment. A camera captures the visitor, optionally paired with a signature. The photo and the choices made are merged. This is exactly where the emotional bond forms: it isn't just any image, it's my image.
5. Result – the outcome. The AI generates an individual final result from all the modules – instantly available, digital, and printable on request. Prepared for social media, with brand elements that travel along when the image is shared.
6. After Experience – after the moment. The moment right after generation is valuable: a QR code for download, a share function, newsletter sign-up, links to the website or shop. A playful experience becomes – cleanly, with consent – a qualified contact.
Why it works
Three mechanisms reinforce each other. First, self-involvement: whoever is in the picture themselves engages with the brand far longer than any poster viewer. Second, social distribution: a personal, surprising image gets shown and shared – the reach comes from the visitors themselves. Third, measurability: every interaction shows which products, colors, and moods the audience actually chooses.
Who the Portal suits
Anywhere brands meet people: trade shows and conferences, showrooms and flagship stores, events and retail activations. The system is modular – selection categories, visual worlds, branding, and after-experience functions are configured per project. The same platform that stages kitchen fronts at a trade fair turns employees into the heroes of their own campaign at a company event.
Conclusion
The Portal translates an old marketing truth into new technology: what you've experienced yourself beats what you've merely seen. Generative AI makes it possible to build a personal brand experience for every single visitor in seconds – and the After Experience makes sure it becomes more than a nice moment.
